Live from WERC 2024: Utilizing a Vacuum Lift with Piab

This episode of the podcast is all about the power of vacuum lifts! Kevin was joined by Bob DeBusk, the North American sales director at PIAB Group at the WERC Conference to discuss their innovative vacuum technology and how it is being used in warehouse operations to make lifting effortless for employees.

The Vacuum Lift Revolution

Bob DeBusk explains the birth and evolution of PIAB’s vacuum lift technology. Initially, the vacuum lifts were stationary and fixed to cranes in manufacturing settings. However, a spike in demand from logistic companies seeking mobile vacuum solutions spurred the development of the Mobile Order Picker (MOP).

He recounts, “We had to develop something for [major companies] looking for a mobile vacuum solution.” The result was the MOP— a battery-powered vacuum lift that operators can easily maneuver within warehouses. This technology not only simplifies the lifting process but also drastically reduces physical strain on workers. Having the flexibility to move these through your operation means that you can have heavy items in multiple different locations and not worry about bad lifts occurring.

How Vacuum Lifts Work

Kevin and Bob delve into the mechanics and power of these vacuum lifts. Unlike traditional household vacuums, these industrial variants are powered by electric three-phase vacuum pumps capable of lifting up to 600 pounds. Bob notes the reliability of the vacuum grip, “Sometimes, new users have a hard time trusting it, but it’s been proven over 40 years.”

Bob elaborates on the key benefits of using vacuum lifts in warehouse operations:

  • Injury Prevention: By automating the lifting process, PIAB’s vacuum lifts reduce the risk of injuries associated with manual lifting.
  • Increased Workforce Diversity: The technology allows warehouses to employ a broader range of individuals, not just those capable of heavy lifting.
  • Improved Productivity: By eliminating the physical strain and reducing workday fatigue, workers can maintain high productivity levels throughout the week.

The Container Unloader Innovation

The discussion pivots to PIAB’s latest innovation—the container unloader. This mobile solution eradicates the labor-intensive process of floor-loaded container unloading. Bob shares a compelling case study where the container unloader reduced a six-person, six-hour task down to three hours with just three individuals, significantly improving efficiency and reducing injury risk.

PIAB’s Human-Centric Approach

Addressing the trend towards full automation, Bob emphasizes PIAB’s human-centric approach. “We embrace the human element,” he states, ensuring that their solutions enhance rather than replace human labor. This philosophy is critical as it balances technological advancement with the well-being and job security of the workforce.
