507: Enhancing Industrial Athlete Safety with AMP Health

AMP Health specializes in injury prevention and management for industrial workforces, focusing on musculoskeletal injuries. Today’s episode of The New Warehouse Podcast features Sam Hollenbach, the CEO and president of AMP Health. Sam shares his journey from professional athlete to health tech innovator and discusses how AMP Health’s cutting-edge solutions protect industrial workers.

From the Field to the Production Floor

Sam’s background as a professional athlete provides a unique perspective on injury prevention. His experience playing football at the University of Maryland and for the Washington Redskins highlighted the importance of staying healthy to perform at a high level. He mentions, “I realized how important it was to be present to be productive. You really let your team down if you were hurt and that was a big blow to the team.”  Transitioning to the health tech industry, he developed products for Under Armour and Amazon, focusing on consumer health. Now, at AMP Health, Sam applies his expertise to industrial athletes, emphasizing that, “helping people perform at a high level really sparked my interest to get them back from an injury faster or preventing that injury from occurring in the first place.”

How AMP Health Leverages Technology to Protect Industrial Athletes

AMP Health leverages advanced technology to assess and mitigate injury risks in industrial settings. Sam saw a really interesting opportunity to leverage some of his insights and apply them to an end consumer or an athlete and apply them to the industrial athlete. One of their standout solutions is a computer vision application that evaluates employees’ movements to identify injury risks. This tool uses a smartphone camera to capture movements, which are then analyzed to produce an injury risk score for different body parts. “The injury risk is shown across five different body parts, ankles, knees, hips, back, and shoulders so you’re getting this injury risk score for the correlation of the movement to the injury risk score,” Sam explains. This proactive approach allows supervisors to make real-time adjustments to reduce injury risks and identify how likely an employee is to get hurt.

Employee Perspectives on AMP Health’s Software

Sam emphasizes how crucial it is to communicate its benefits effectively to the employees. We frame AMP Health’s software as a tool for maintaining health rather than a means of performance monitoring. He states, “Ultimately, nobody wants to get hurt. Nobody wants to lose time.” The software resonates positively when they understand that the software can protect them and enhance their health. The goal is to foster an environment that is physically and psychologically safe
